Retina

The retina acts as a screen for the image of our perception – comparable to the film in a camera. Light stimuli are recorded here inside the eye, converted into electrical impulses and then passed on to the brain, which then comprises a corresponding image.

Macular degeneration

The macula is the point of sharpest vision on the retina centre. A disorder in this area is called macular degeneration. The most common form is the age-related macular degeneration.

First signs of this disorder may occur while reading: A blur in the typeface appears. Since the disease is painless, it often goes unnoticed. We therefore clearly recommend a check-up, if you notice any changes in your vision or if the following risk factors apply to you:

  • Advanced age
  • Family members are affected
  • Smoking
  • Hypertension
  • Cardiovascular Diseases

The treatment of macular degeneration is either with a special laser or with medication. It may slow disease progression, possibly stop the disease and in the best possible case the condition of patients may even get better.

Retinal surgery

Vitreo-retina surgery (pars plana vitrectomy = PPV) means the removal of vitreous opacities and membranes, which aren’t important for the visual performance. It is frequently used for the treatment of various retinal diseases:

  • Vitreous haze
  • Holes in the retina or macula
  • Membranes on the retina

Rely on the extensive experience of our surgeons and our up-to-date methods of seamless operation.
