Glaucoma

The clinical picture of the so-called glaucoma includes various eye diseases, which ultimately lead to a loss of optic nerves, and therefore to a loss of vision.

One of the characteristics of glaucoma is the age-related progressive deterioration of vision, which often goes unnoticed: It proceeds painlessly. However, the development is irreversible. This is why an early diagnosis is vital.

For a glaucoma screening

  • Intraocular pressure (IOP)
  • Optic nerve papilla
  • and if needed the field of vision are checked.

Certain groups are particularly at risk.

Take the question test and see us for a check-up, if your answer to one or more of these questions is "yes":

  • Do you know of glaucoma in your family?
  • Do you suffer from cardiovascular disease?
  • Or diabetes?
  • Do you take any medications (e. g. cortisone)?
  • Do you have thyroid problems?
  • Are there any other eye problems?

Treatment

Basically, damage to the optic nerve can be treated by medication: with pressure-reducing eye drops.

In fact, the greatest risk factor in the progression of glaucoma is an elevated intraocular pressure caused by an obstruction of the outflow of aqueous fluid – like in a clogged bathtub.
